Beginning at Whalebone Junction in Nags Head, the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway, or NC HWY 12 South, offers miles of unsurpassed beauty and undeveloped landscape. Along this artery, the Atlantic Ocean flanks the road to the east while the Pamlico Sound nestles the road to the west. Miles of dune lines and sea oats, water views and endless skies break the strain of hectic traveling and allow guests the opportunity to relax, slow down, and immerse themselves in Outer Banks scenery.

Characteristic high dunes with wide beaches, consistent winds and exceptional sport fishing are just a few of the reasons visitors’ spring to this secluded island and keep returning year after year. The villages are minimally influenced by commercialism; therefore the restaurants, shops and storefronts are all locally-owned and operated. Restaurants within these areas serve up some of the best locally-caught seafood that the Outer Banks has to offer and the stores in these villages delight in handmade trinkets and local art.

Cape Hatteras and the National Seashore is comprised of seven villages. The villages of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo, most commonly known as the “tri-villages”, are the first three areas you encounter once arriving on the island. Though relatively small in size, these three areas pack a punch when it comes to small beach living and consistent winds that offer water sport enthusiasts the ride of their lives. The Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site and Museum, located in Rodanthe, dates back to 1874 and allows visitors to explore original grounds and see how the building of lifesaving stations along the eastern shore of the U.S. became what we know today as the US Coast Guard.

Further south along Cape Hatteras, the villages of Avon, Buxton and Frisco come to life. These three areas offer shopping, restaurants and grocery stores. Locally-caught seafood is served and local winds create prime spots for surfing, kite boarding and windsurfing. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, located in Buxton, is open during the summer months for climbing and offers a unique view to the surrounding area.

The final village along this stretch of land is Hatteras Village. The most southern point of Hatteras Island and concluding the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, this area promises exceptional sport fishing and expansive beaches. Charter a boat to catch a big game fish or cast your lines from the beaches and piers, either way, the fish that are brought in from this area are sure to delight beginners and even the most experienced of anglers. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is also located in Hatteras Village, recounting the treacherous waters that lay off the coast of North Carolina and of the ships that have fallen victim to its power. Whether you are looking to enjoy island time, take part in water sports or reel in the big one, Cape Hatteras and its National Seashore has it all.
